Eating Healthier After-Dinner Desserts

by Jeremiah Richardson

Confess it, you are tempted. And who wouldn't? The look of desserts is seductive enough, how much more if you taste them? But for some reasons, you keep yourself from sinking your teeth into one soft, lush dark chocolate cake. You know that a bite of that lush, decadent slice wouldn't be sufficient and would destroy your hard work at the gym. And you ask, is there any way you can eat desserts without adding a pound or two on the scale?

Well, you can and you cannot.

There isn't a certain answer because what is effective for some may not work for others. Don't be confused if a pal can eat a whole cake for dessert and not worry about his or her weight, but you can't even finish a half of tart without feeling the result on the weighing scale the next day. So for us who constantly need to check our weight but still lust for desserts, let's just try to make desserts a little healthier for us.

To begin with, have an organic meal. If you are expecting a sinfully sweet dessert later on, start with something healthy to cut your guilt. If you are going to have a calorific dessert, then cut down the calories on your meal.

Pile up your desserts with organic ingredients. Instead of all bad-for-your sweets, add some fruits to balance the nutritious factors. But if you are buying instead of cooking, then read look for those with organic ingredients and search those with "low fat," low calorie," no calorie" etc. on the labels.

Have your dessert in little portions. Have you seen those chic desserts served at restaurants and bakeries? They are like the Mini-Me's of a full cake but they are actually less than a regular piece. They look great, though, and still very appetizing. Try to eat yours in those petite sizes. They still taste the same, but you are just eating an average slice.

And lastly, try to consume decadent desserts during special functions only. Think of it this way, you are just making a dessert more special by eating them during special days. If you consume them everyday, as unbelievable as this may seem, you might lose interest in them because they are not "off-limits" to you any longer. Eating the decadent sweets during special affairs doesn't mean going missing desserts altogether every meal. Sweet desserts can be fruits in parfait or yogurt. Still has the goodness of a dessert without the guilt feelings.

Just like a good book, a meal isn't complete without a sweet closing. You may have just had the fullest meal in your life or the not-so-special dinner, but a meal isn't complete without desserts.
