Meaning Of Halal Labels In Eateries

by Chantal Powell

The term "halal" is getting more and more ubiquitous on restaurant establishments and food product labels these days. Even though we sure enough have an idea of what it means, most of us still don't kow what it fully signifies. We may know it has something to do with Islamic practice, but that may be all we know at this point.

Halal, to simplify its meaning, is lawful to Islamic laws. So a halal eatery means our Muslim friends can eat in the establishment without breaking any Islamic laws. When an eatery is labeled as a halal restaurant, it means the ingredients and the cooking of the menu are in accordance to the principles of Sharia, or the way or path Muslims should live.

A halal-certified restaurant in a mixed religion nation means that it abides by the Islamic rules by its own accord. It's easy to be a halal eatery in a country dominated by Muslims, but such is not the case if you are living in a nation wherein religions are integrated. So that would just mean that a restaurant that is halal-certified prioritizes each and every one of its patrons. It goes out of its way to serve all its customers, no matter what religion they belong to.

And even though halal-certified establishments are growing in number these days, being a halal restaurant isn't just putting up a sign outside the establishment. It takes careful practice from the butchering of its meat to its cautious pick of its ingredients to its watchful preparation of the menu.

And if that still sounds easy, it does not stop there. There are many other practices and principles an eatery must abide by before it becomes halal-certified. Examples include preventing cross-contamination of products by keeping the utensils and materials used for the cooking of non-halal food away from those being used for halal products.

Halal-certified eateries give their patrons more selections. For our Muslim brothers and sisters, halal eateries allow them to dine in and enjoy good food without compromising their religious beliefs. They don't have to settle for less food quality. That is how halal restaurants give more value to their customers.
